In Canada, we are privileged to enjoy the gifts of peace, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. Being intimately acquainted with the feelings of fear and chaos following instability, it is essential that we never forget the extraordinary service offered by all our men and women in uniform or lose sight of what their sacrifices have meant for our lives. The quality of life we are so blessed to enjoy is a gift they have given us.
Canadians in uniform have bravely stepped forward to serve throughout history to defend people at home and around the world facing conflict and war. Far too many of our heroes have given their lives so that others can know peace and flourish, and this is a debt that we can never truly repay. We can show our gratitude to those who served and honour their legacies by committing to make the most of the gifts they fought for through our own thoughtful citizenship. It remains our collective duty to cherish the principles that they stood for and stand together against hatred and intolerance. Let us never forget those who sacrificed everything to build a more peaceful world.
As His Majesty the King’s representative in Alberta, I offer my most heartfelt gratitude to all of our veterans and Canadians in uniform for your tireless service. Like the Poppy of Remembrance, the gratitude of your fellow Canadians only deepens in strength and meaning with each passing year.
To those who are grieving a fallen hero, I hope that you find comfort in the knowledge that your loved ones will never be forgotten. They live on in our hearts and minds, and in the spirit of peace that endures in this land because of their bravery and sacrifice.
Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, AOE, BSc, LLD (hon)
Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
