On this National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People, we remember those tragically lost to senseless violence and recognize the ongoing pain experienced by their family and loved ones. The red dresses and ribbons that appear on this special day honour their lives and remind us of the active role we must all play in creating a society where each member feels safe and protected, and where everyone is treated with compassion, dignity and respect.

As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta, I offer my heartfelt wishes for healing and peace to those who are mourning a lost loved one. I also offer my sincere gratitude to all those who contribute to the essential process of Truth and Reconciliation, and to everyone who works to prevent gender-based violence in our communities.

Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani AOE, B.Sc., LLD (hon)

Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
