On this day in 1953, the coronation ceremony took place for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The special investiture at Westminster Abbey in London came after the Queen’s immediate succession upon the death of King George VI on February 6, 1952.  This year’s coronation commemoration is particularly meaningful because it marks the beginning of official celebrations in London, and across the Commonwealth, in honour of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. It is a truly remarkable milestone and an opportunity for us all to reflect on tireless service that our Queen of Canada has offered over the past 70 years, as well as the very special place that Her Majesty holds in our history and in the hearts of Canadians.

I am looking forward to upcoming Platinum Jubilee celebrations, so that we can all join in honouring everything that Her Majesty has given to our province and country through the decades.

Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani AOE, B.Sc., LLD (Hon)

Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
