Heritage Day is a celebration of many things. It is a day to spend time with family and friends, to savour the pleasures of summer and, perhaps, to venture out and enjoy some of the natural beauty that Alberta has in great abundance. It is also a time to recognize and honour the wealth of vibrant cultures that make up the fabric of our society.

Diversity is one of our greatest assets and we are made stronger as a whole when every citizen is encouraged to proudly share the full richness of their culture. The Heritage Day events taking place across our province are wonderful opportunities to learn from one another, to respect the things that make us different and, ultimately, to discover that we have more in common as neighbours and as fellow Canadians that we ever thought possible.

As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta, I wish everyone a very enjoyable, relaxing and safe Heritage Day long weekend!

Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani AOE, B.Sc., LLD (hon)
Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
