The International Day of Peace for 2021 finds humanity facing many challenges around the globe, and it is heart wrenching to see how misunderstanding, prejudice and conflict can shake our world. And yet, I believe in the power that we each hold to move the balance in the direction of peace, compassion and understanding. I draw tremendous strength from the example of leaders like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who once said “do your little bit of good where you are; it is those bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” On this special day, I would like to encourage everyone to do one small thing,  one act of kindness, to bring a little more peace to the people around you or to foster a greater sense of understanding in your community. Collectively, we can achieve so much simply by sharing our compassion and the best of our spirit with the world.

As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta, I offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone who works for peace, including all those who contribute to the work of local, national and international humanitarian organizations. I wish you every possible success in your essential efforts.

Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani AOE, B.Sc., LLD (hon)

Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
