As His Majesty the King’s representative in Alberta, I am proud to recognize and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6.

By signing this monumental document, the First Nations, the Crown, and Crown representatives like me all committed themselves to an ongoing relationship rooted in the spirit of peace, friendship, and mutual respect. Treaty 6 began shaping Alberta’s history before a province bearing that name even existed, and it will continue to govern our affairs in perpetuity—or to use the famously poetic Cree phrase, “for as long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the river flows.”

Today is a day to look back and appreciate how the relationship between Indigenous people and settler Canadians has evolved since Treaty 6 came into force, but it is also an occasion to look into the future and imagine the ways everyone who now lives on this land might advance spiritually, economically and politically, and together achieve full reconciliation.

As Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor, I renew my pledge to honour Indigenous Albertans, heed their wisdom, learn from past mistakes, and ensure Treaty 6 remains a living document.

Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, AOE, BSc, LLD (hon)

Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
