I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the Honourable Ritu Khullar, Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Appeal. I join her family, friends, and colleagues in mourning the passing of a remarkable Albertan.
I always admired Chief Justice Khullar for her keen legal intelligence, and even more so for the progressive causes she chose to apply it to. When she became a judge, she never lost sight of the human beings behind the cases she decided. As she once observed, “To be a judge, one must draw on everything; not only one’s intellect and understanding of the law, but also an understanding of people and of life.”
Chief Justice Khullar leaves behind a legacy of dedication and compassion. On behalf of all Albertans, I offer my heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones.
Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, AOE, BSc, LLD (hon)
Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
