On the solemn occasion of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People, let us, with reverence, commemorate the lives of all those who were lost to senseless violence and those whose cases have yet to be put to rest. As we honour those who are gone, let the red dresses and ribbons that appear on this special day serve as a reminder of our collective responsibility to create a society where the dignity of life is respected and where each person feels safe.
As His Majesty the King’s representative in Alberta, I extend my profound wishes for healing to all those who are mourning a loved one. I also offer my sincere gratitude to all those who are paving the way to the most necessary process of Truth and Reconciliation, and those who are working to prevent gender-based violence in our communities.
Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, AOE, BSc, LLD (hon)
Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
