Today marks the beginning of our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Year, and it is important to note that this is the first such celebration in our history. On this day in 1952, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II began what was has been a truly extraordinary reign. Over the past 70 years, Her Majesty has been a steadying presence and a pillar of strength to generations of Canadians, encouraging and comforting us through challenging times and celebrating our milestones and successes.
On her 21st birthday, the then Princess Elizabeth said “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service.” Our Queen has always honoured that vow and we are proud to celebrate Her Majesty as our longest reigning and most beloved monarch. She is an indelible part of the fabric of our society. More than a living embodiment of the Crown and a central part of our cherished system of government, our Queen also represents the power of service above self to Canadians and to citizens throughout the Commonwealth.
As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta, and on behalf of my fellow Albertans, I am honoured to extend my deepest congratulations on this remarkable milestone, along with my most heartfelt gratitude to our Queen of Canada for Her Majesty’s decades of inspiring and meaningful service.
Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani AOE, B.Sc., LLD (Hon), Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
