To be multicultural is to be Canadian. Canadian Multiculturalism Day is an opportunity to celebrate cultures, faiths and traditions that make up the vibrant tapestry of our country's communities.
This day is also a reminder that the creation of a welcoming and inclusive society does not happen by accident. It is an intentional and ongoing process that requires an individual commitment to standing up to hatred and intolerance wherever, and whenever, we see it. Each of us can play a meaningful role in fostering understanding through listening to one another, by recognizing where we can and must do better, and by devoting our talents and energies to furthering positive change.
As His Majesty the King’s representative in Alberta, I offer my sincere gratitude to community leaders, volunteers, and engaged citizens for everything they are doing to keep the accepting nature of our communities alive, and their continuous work to preserve the multicultural spirit of our province and country.
Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, AOE, BSc, LLD (hon)
