Edmonton...Her Honour, the Honourable Lois Mitchell took the oath of office today to become the 18th Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Events included a formal installation ceremony in the Chamber of the Alberta Legislature Building followed by outdoor closing ceremonies that featured a 15-gun Royal Salute, a 100-person military guard of honour and ceremonial music.

In her remarks to Members of the Legislative Assembly and invited guests, Lieutenant Governor Mitchell said, “I’m humbled by this rare opportunity to represent Her Majesty the Queen and to serve as a safeguard of everything that the Crown in Canada represents…we are blessed to live in a place that offers peace, freedom, democracy and the rule of law to all citizens, and I’m very much aware that my principal duty as Lieutenant Governor is to safeguard those key constitutional principles that define who we are as Canadians.”

The Lieutenant Governor also paid tribute to her vice-regal predecessors, spoke about her hopes for her time in office and pledged to serve the best interests of her fellow Albertans.
