During her tenure, the Hon. Lois Mitchell hosted numerous programs and contests to encourage all Albertans, and particularly youth, to learn about pivotal moments in Canadian history. This includes contests inspired by the 100th anniversary of the First World War, such as the Spirit of Vimy, the Spirit of Victory and the Spirit of Peace, which were offered in collaboration with the stand alone History and Heroes Foundation.

At the launch of the Spirit of Vimy contest at an event in Calgary, Hon. Mitchell said, " as a former teacher and proud Canadian, I have a strong interest in sharing the stories, the people and events of our nations's history. Our goal is to encourage young Albertans to explore a pivotal chapter in our history and bring their own unique spirit and creativity to task of honouring those who fought and fell on our behalf a century ago.”

Information about the contests and other initiatives are available through the Foundation.
